About Paws & Numbers
Paws & Numbers is a small collection of free calculators for dog and cat owners. The goal is simple: quick, honest answers to everyday pet questions, with the math and the sources out in the open.
How the calculators work
Each calculator is based on published veterinary formulas and reference values rather than guesswork. Examples:
- The dog food calculator uses the resting energy requirement (RER = 70 × body weight in kg0.75) and the life stage factors used in veterinary nutrition.
- The chocolate toxicity calculator uses the theobromine content of chocolate and the toxic dose levels listed in the Merck Veterinary Manual.
- The puppy weight calculator uses growth curves for five size classes, simplified from published growth standards.
- The cat age and dog age calculators follow the conventions of the AAHA, AAFP and AVMA.
Every page shows the formula, a worked example and its sources. Calculations run entirely in your browser; the numbers you enter are never sent to us.
What we are not
We are not veterinarians, and the calculators are not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Pets differ, and a vet who can examine your animal will always know more than a formula. If your pet may be ill or may have eaten something toxic, contact your veterinarian, an emergency clinic or a pet poison hotline right away.
Corrections
If you find an error, an outdated value or a source we should look at, please email hello@pawsandnumbers.com with the page and the correction. We review every report.
